![]() Capt. Alan and Mates Darryl and Anthony had Brian C's group out for their annual offshore adventure. While we've had very fortunate and productive trips over the years with these guys, we realize we have never had a bigeye with them. So we set up this trip to capitalize on the excellent mahi fishing during the daylight hours, followed by a "trophy hunt" of bigeye in the evening, and whatever else happens after that. The guys were all in on it...Arriving in a the canyon in the afternoon, the guys got into some great mahi up to 8 pounds fishing on light spinning gear. We then headed to the bigeye grounds, and before we even had our spread out we hooked and briefly fought a white marlin before it spit the hook. The guys added a 40# yellowfin on the troll. Then around 7:30 pm the right one jumped on, and 40 minutes later Anthony darted our biggest eyeball of the season, estimated close to 275#. We weren't sure what the night would bring, but drifting into the deep found a pod of flying fish being corralled by small yellowfin, and the guys broke out the jigs and landed a bunch, although some were barely legal in size and went back. The morning troll included 1 of 2 longfin before the long bumpy ride in. So the crash landing part...one of the charter brought a really neat "drone" to fly out and take pictures of the action...well we all learned a hard lesson...do NOT launch out of the cockpit (even of a Henriques 44) as drones and center riggers do not mix! The vertical launch into the center rigger led to the drone coming down as fast as it went up...but it landed in many pieces and the spinning blades did some bodily damage! All in good fun! Good times!
