6/19-20 Mushin Canyon Safari - Tuna & "Go Ahead and MAKO my day"
6/19-20 - Capts. Alan and Chad had an open boat CANYON SAFARI of George, Jeff, Nick, Pat, and Brian. We left out Friday evening, and fished the mid-range area for MAKOs by 9 pm. We had beautiful weather but NO DRIFT (we drifted a half mile between 9 pm and 2 am), making it tough to shark. But at 1:30 am, George got on the rod and fought a high-flying 200# mako that gave us 3 boatside jumps to splash us good. He then got seriously tailwrapped and in a final burst got his freedom and broke our hearts. By then it was about 2 am, so onward to the canyon...we got to the deep of a local canyon and put out the spread. We were repeatedly covered up with many many multiple hookups on yellowfin from rat sized to 45#, topped off by 10 on! Broke several tuna cherries for the guys. After well over 3 dozen yellowfin to the boat (keeping only the biggest 9) by 10 am, we were either going to tilefish or mako fish (again). With a fast drift, we passed on tilefishing and went back to the mid-range grounds to shark. Long story short. We hooked and fought 3 more makos - and lost all 3 of them - to broken wire, broken cable, and a pulled hook. Oh well, that's how it goes some days! The guys had a great attitude and experience for the day, and had some serious offshore action! The offshore scene is hot, and looks great as a beautiful body of water has pulled in locally - we caught tuna consistently all morning even when we worked away from the fleet. Next OPEN BOAT Trips Wed July 1, July 2-3, July 5.
