Arrow Have at em....Brook Trout

Free bait for those go big or go home guys

Although the regular 2014 spring stocking program concluded early this year, the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife will be stocking 2000 trout in ten waters tomorrow, May 7. The trout are in addition to the allotments previously announced.

Brook Trout, weighing almost a pound each, will be stocked in each of the following ten waters: Dahnert's Lake (Bergen), Indian Lake (Bergen), Diamond Mill Pond (Essex), Verona Park Lake (Essex), Roosevelt Park Pond (Middlesex), Burnham Park Pond (Morris), Barbour's Pond (Passaic), Oldham Pond (Passaic), Lower Echo Park Pond (Union), and Milton Lake (Union). Each waterbody will receive 200 brook trout.

For more information on the 2014 season, including the trout fishing opportunities available, visit http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/trtinfo_spring14.htm on the Division's website.

Weeks into the season and I've seen about 90% less people trout fishing this year because they catch nothing when they go, and are fed up. I've been going about every day and so far I've caught 41 brown trout. I've still not caught 6 in a day, my best so far is 4 one time most days it's 1 or 2 in a couple of hours. Last year by this time I caught well over 100 rainbows and brookies, and all were on spinners. This year spinners worked for a few days, but I've caught no trout on them for weeks now, just follow ups. In fact I can find no lure that will catch these browns and I've tried everything. I know the lures work because I catch other fish on them, just no trout. I'd still like to know why they boned us by stocking only brown trout in Mercer Country when every other year they always stocked rainbows and brookies. I understand the problems with the brookies but not why the rainbows all seemed to other places this year. Are these trout to sick to chase lures I wonder? Sunday I watched a school of about 50 trout all on top of the water churning around moving with the current down the Feeder Canal. I threw everything had at they but the best I got was one follow up. I wonder if they were all sick?

some days there's catching, but at least it's always fishing... keep at it. maybe take a ride and try some different waters? a lot of guys i know are having better than average years even w/ the stocking issues

they didn't stock sick fish, only fish that had been exposed and treated (and did not show signs of infection). the likelihood that all 50 were sick is slim to none.

I've been killing em on phoebes all season. I'm not a big fan of that lure but I've pulled more trout this year than I ever have

Phoebes and Kastmaster spoons and a tiny UL Shadrap have been catching most of the trout for me.
