Default 4.27.14 Bottom fishing.

For our first trip of the season we decided to try a little bottom fishing. Jay, Neil and I left the dock around 6:15am. We first headed over by round shoal and dropped in a couple of stretches to see if we could start off with a couple of bass filets for the box. We started just east of the fleet and worked our way over to the reach channel, up along the NY side of the reach past the rock pile without a touch. It was just about slack tide so we picked up the lines and ran outside to 80’ of water to see if anyone was home.

We set up on a nice piece that has held some ling and cod this time of year in the past, immediate action with the bergalls and I had one hit that felt to me like a nice blackfish but never came tight. After an hour or so we wiggled a bit on the same piece but now about 65’…… same thing, except we did find a green boomerang in the tide line that went by ( I hit the MOB so if anyone wants to target them let me know). We fed the bergalls for a while there and decided to take a ride to the SH reef, rode around a bit looking for some life on the screen but it didn’t look very promising. I didn’t have a wreck anchor on the boat so I set up on the north end of the reef with the anchor in the sand and dropped back to some sticky…… there Neil managed to catch the only fish of the day…. One lost ling.

With the fishing on the slow side, a NW wind and the moon low tide approaching (not to mention the Ranger game at the Bluerock calling my name) I decided to pull the plug early so we didn’t have to stay out till 3pm to have enough water to get in. Back at the dock we did see quite a few bass hit the filet table….. some guys did well….. others not so much. Looked like it was hit or miss out there yesterday, which is understandable with all the boat traffic that we saw on the bass grounds. I could imagine the fish being a little skittish after 3 days of getting pounded.

Not the most productive trip, that’s for sure, but it was nice getting out there on the water after the last 4 months from hell. If the weather allows we may go and hit some offshore wrecks next time.

Well, like you said at least you got out... Seems like the blackfishing is really tough this spring... It probably break wide open on May 1 when we get cut back to 1 fish

Lol, your right Gerry, I'm sure it will bust wide open on Thursday.

I think Blackfishing is closed from May 1st till July 17th.... when it opens again for one fish.
