Thumbs down Re: 114,000 brookies to be euthanized...

The state already screwed up by not stocking the Holdover Lakes this year but
are still dumping or should I say wasting trout in park ponds.

The way that I look at it. It def is a shame all those fish going to waste but I look at the better end of it. If all those fish were released with other stockies they might have affected so many more fish.

Apparently those fish have just recently tested positive so the only safe and logical step would be to euthanize them. Considering over 90,000 of them were slated for those '1-time' stockings and it's likely a safe bet that more than the remainder were scheduled for those increased numbers in other 'non-trout' waters I'm betting it won't have much impact on the rest of the proposed spring stocking schedule.
That aside it's also the right thing to do for the overall health of the hatchery and the fish remaining there. Now they can proceed sooner than planned with disinfecting those raceways to prepare them to recieve the fry that will soon enough be coming out of the nursery building.

It's certainly one hell of a 'bump in the road' for this years trout fishing but I'm not worried myself. I have every confidence that aside from a shift in the species percentages, things will be very near if not completely normal come next spring.

For now I'm just waiting to see the newly revised stocking schedule that this latest occurrence has forced the staff to devise. I have a pretty fair idea of all that goes into developing the schedule and allocations for the entire state, and frankly it's a logistical nightmare this year that I wouldn't want to have to deal with, especially given the time crunch they're facing now!

This is a major bummer, can it get any worse? Hopefully I didn't speak too soon. I guess there's only one thing left to do, go fishin! This will ease the pain of the trout situation. FASTEDDIE OUT, gone Sturgeon fishing!!!

Schedule is still underway and in tack.. matter fact my dad is out stocking today.

I think they are doing lakes starting south moving central and north becuase of ice.

Week of opening day - the majors will be hit

Those fish if I am not mistaken (dont take this for gospel) - were the fish that were suppose to be stocked in the passaic, raritan, hackensack...

THAT IS NOT FACT! Just what I was informed...

And Dave is right - the issues is the raceways that the fish are in.. They need to be disinfected froms soup to nuts so that they can get back to business.

Maybe they should just focus on stocking more bass this year.
