Default Cast net maintenance -A few tips

After each day of cast netting it is imperative to wash it with fresh water. The net will last for years. It should be stowed away in a fish basket with holes so it drains. Fish baskets are cheap, around $15-$20. A premium bunker net is $250. Every once in awhile it should be totally spread out in the parking lot and all the brails untangled. Once every season it should be soaked in a five gallon bucket with fresh water and fabric softener over night. After the soaking rinse thoroughly with fresh water. The next step is to hang it by the plastic horn high enough so the lead weights are off the ground. This will stretch the net back to original form and make it soft and pliable again. By the way you measure a net from the horn to the weights. The most common net used is a ten footer. A ten foot net opens up to twenty feet across. Twelve foot nets are legal in New Jersey but not in New York.

When purchasing a net do not get fooled by some of the bigger manufacturers! A quality net is built with 15-20 lb monofilament. The larger the mesh the ''LESS WIEGHT" you need. Some of the Chinese and Betts nets will kill you after a few throws. There is a link on my we site to Percy Cast Nets. He has a video on how to throw. There is also a video on mine with us loading up on bunker. Percy is 80 years old and he can throw a net and you can to with a little help. It is technique not strength that counts! I hope this will help a few of you that already have a net or want to get started.
