Default Kayak Role Call

Hey kayak anglers! I'm in the market for a 'yak. Sports Authority has the Lifetime Tamarack 120 on sale right now and I am considering making the plunge. Tell me what you got and what you like about it.

Thanks!

After owning a 10ft'er for 3 years now and putting tons of hours and miles on it, I honestly would recommend a 12ft'er. When I kayak with my buddies who own 12ft'ers, the speed they have on me with the same paddling effort is EXTREMELY noticeable and oftentimes, I fall behind. Its great for short, easy paddles, but if you plan on hitting the big lakes like I do or just traveling a decent distance to a spot, I would pick up a 12'. And after taking my friends' 12ft'ers out for a paddle, the speed and stability is DEFINITELY noticeable. If you are sticking to small bodies of water and short paddles, by all means go with that kayak. It looks like a solid boat with decent storage for its size.

With that being said, I will sell you my 10ft'er rigged and ready to go for $325 including the fish finder .

Thanks Rob! My mom told me a 12 footer would be better too. I'm not kidding either, she's an active 60-something retiree exploring the coastal back waters around Ocala, FL.

Gander Mountain has a nice sale going on. I'm very close to picking up the Perception Sound 12.5 for $425 w/free shipping.

.

It may pay to visit The Kayak Fishing Store in Fairfield.
I learned a lot from the guy who owns the store. They have a lot of boats and equipment in the store and the store owner really knows kayak fishing. Totally different experience than shopping in a big box store.

Their address is:
The Kayak Fishing Store
125 Clinton Rd. #7
Fairfield, NJ. 07004
973.227.3251

Their website is:
http://www.thekayakfishingstore.com/CTUS.html

I got a Native Redfish 10. The store installed two rod holders, anchor trolley, anchor cleat, and a few other odds-and-ends.
They guy at the store suggested the 12 foot model, but I really wanted the 10 foot model. I drive a tiny car and live in a cramped, little apartment, so space is always at a premium. The 10 foot model just fit the space I had available better.

Here's a pic of my kayak at Spruce Run:

i started off in a feel free moken 10 and it was awesome, until i had to paddle anything more then a small lake or had a friend with me that had a 12 ft. I upgraded to a jackson cuda 12. Awesome kayak but not cheap. To be honest you should really paddle a few before you make the dive in. You are better off finding a decent used ocean kayak or wilderness system off craigs. For about the same money as a cheaper new one you can have a good used one. Try to find something with a rudder if possible. It helps more then you can even imagine.

Good luck pm if you need any advice

That was my original thought, I was going to wait until I got all settled into my new house before buying any more stuff. If I resist the urge to buy something just because its cheap I'll probably be happier in the long run. Thanks for the advice!

If you really plan on using it don't cheap out. I was out just about everyday until I hurt my shoulder and I'm really happy I didn't cheap out. Good luck on the hunt

I have an ocean kayak prowler 13'. I've only had it for about two weeks and I love it. I bought it used off craigslist. I read a lot of reviews and the perceptions are very well made. if I was buying new I would go that route.
