Default Canyon Runner Big-Eye Limit!! 14 for the Year So Far - Far Far Away

With a two night 48 hour overnighter with the Bill Nye charter we decide to head to where the fish are! Capt. Mark and I decide to make the long but commfortable run in the 60 Ritchie Howell south and go to the edge south of Poormans where he started out on the troll around 5am. Trolling through the day produced several yellowfin with a limit in the boat of 30-35 pound fish and a few released and mahi but also produced a couple big-eye bites early in they day that pulled hooks.

By 6pm that all changed - and for the next 3 hours the boat fought 6 big-eyes bringing 4 to their untimely death by harpoon. These fish fill were all 200-230 pounds and each of the 4 man charter got to reel in one for themselves – not often when you limit out on Big-Eyes!! (Just Kidding – no limits of course on big-eyes - but 1 for each guy on the charter is enough!). By the way - the biggest was caught on a Penn 30W - packed with spectra it's really all you need as they are great reels!

At the end of their troll they saw 8 single bites by big-eyes with 4 killed and 4 staying on for 1 minute up to 20 minutes before the hooks pulled. We had just a sliver of room left in the massive fishbox we have on the 60' Ritchie so they stop at the inshore bluefin lumps off of Ocean City, MD and went 2 for 5 on bluefin up to 100 pounds. At one point we were 165 miles from the inlet and covered about 320 miles off water while at cruise. We only burned 757 gallons and that’s with the generator running for 48 hours and trolling for another 20 hours. So I guess next time will look to fish The Point off Hatteras if need be! I think that's only 240 miles - one way!!

Taking a look at our year so for on the big-eyes it’s been a decent year for only 4 weeks:

14 bigeyes - 11 on plastic .. 3 on Ballyhoo
7 on 48 ... 7 on 60
Hudson, Wilmington, Baltimore and Washington Canyons have all produced Bigeyes for us
12 additional bigeye bites that either missed or pulled hook
Great Bigeye season so far ... lets hope it continues!

Shoot us an email if you want to hear more about which plastics are producing and grab some off our website – we’ve been out of stock on a lot of them but just got everything back in stock this week so call if you need anything or just visit – www.canyonrunner.com for your tackle needs – Dean and the rest of the crew are rigging up a bunch of dredges and the new color squid bars right now so we will have plenty in stock until the wind lets up again and we start fishing.

By the way - our charters are almost filled up until after Labor Day now but we do have a couple spots the last week of July for open boat trips on the 48 Viking and tons of dates in September so grab them up now while you still have a choice. Only July 30-31 and August 1-2 and 12-13 left on the 60 Ritchie through August then only 4-5 days left in September. Book us and we’ll take you where the fish are – even if it’s a 320 mile round trip!!
