Thumbs up Ocean to windy go catch trout

Woke thismorning around 3:25am tey hunting and made sure I had my 3 wt fly rod just in case nothing was stirring in the woods. Well to say the least, it was windy and a full moon and not one gobble. Ileft the wood around 7:30 and had some breakfast then hit a local stream. I could see the fish mulling around but they wouldn't hit. All of a sudden, I see a huge swirl that I thought was a small mouth bass. I went into my fly box and found a large #10 hopper. I figured whatever was feeding on the top anted somethin big. I place the fly perfect on the first cast and it was on. As soon as the fish jumped, I was supprised to see it was a large rainbow. After about a 3 min battle it hit the net. It was 22" and I guessed it about 3 or so lbs.

I fished fo abou 3 hours catching many more smaller fish then I hooked into another beauty. This one as well as many of the others took a #14 bead head phesant tail:

It turned out to be a great day an the fillets are in the brine and will be in the smoker all day Sunday.

I hope everyone out there has a wonderfull Memorial Day Weekend and don't forget to Thank A Vet

Iwould love to get you started fly fishing. It's so much more fun then that spinner fishing. Let me know, and I'll meet you up at Penn Creek some time.

Lightbulb Re: Ocean to windy go catch trout

Get me started ? When I was 12 I got a Cherrywood fly rod under the Christmas tree, I think ABU Garcia made it. I remember going to a tackle store that was in the Blue Star shopping center and drooling all over a fly rod the guy had in the store. I was fly fishing the big fast water of the Raritan over 40 years ago with streamers for smallmouth. Fished the slower water with poppers. I still have my fly rod here in the corner of the office but I don't break it out that often. Most New Jersey water is so small you can't even back cast. I always think of visiting my roots and getting back down on the big water with streamers for smallmouth. The Black Ghost was my favorite.
