Interested in info also! Went to Secrets Capri and Dreams Tulum a few years ago and didn't get a chance to fish, but we are headed to Playa Del Carmen this summer and I'd like to try to get out fishing. Any first hand suggestions would be great!

Chris, I am going to be fishing 1 or 2 days in Cozumel on my trip this 16th - 21st with http://www.fishingcozumel.net/rates.htm .

They do trips out of Playa del Carmen as well and will let you know how they fared. All the reviews I saw online from tripadviser were mostly great. All the bad ones seem to be people that were complaining of fishing and not catching.

Chris & Big Bucks.... In 2006 we went with six couples to the Iberostar Tucan in Playa del Carmen. Week of sightseeing, ( Tulum and some other ruins another day ) sunning, eating and drinking.
Did I mention drinking ?

While four husbands golfed one day, and the girls shopped, my brother & I went on a 6-pack charter out of Puerto Aventuras. A 31 foot Bertram, 0800--1400 was $ 100 or $125 a guy, plus tip.
The hotel hooked us up with 2 other couples from surrounding hotels. One of which may have been the El Dorado. I don't remember.
You can google Riviera Maya fishing, or Puerto Aventuras. As I recall, the charter boats are about 1/2 hour from Playa del Carmen.
You can also take a ferry to Cancun, but the extra travel time could make for a long long day. 4 of our friends went early one day. Returned after midnite.

Anyway......we trolled in 3-5 foot swells all day, hoping for sails or marlin.
No such luck. We caught 2 yellowfin, and 2 mahi. Nothing big but okay on the broomsticks the boat provided.
The two couples we were with, the women were tougher than the guys.
They were all Midwest Crappie & Smallmouth fisher-people. The guys were green and tossing their cookies. They wanted to go in by 0900.
My brother and I are nice guys, but not that nice. We made them man-up like their farm-girl wives.

Good luck. Have a safe trip.

Check out Captain Rick's out of Puerto Aventuras. 31' Bertrams. Good people. Went out fishing with them a few years back. They charged a reduced rate for my wife to join us, as she doesn't fish. A dad was with his son who got sick. They asked if we minded if they could take them back. The fishing is so close to the port that we all agreed to drop them back at the dock. Heck, 2 less people to take up space in the cockpit.

We trolled for a few hours and no luck. Capt asked if we wanted to catch fish, so we all agreed to bottom fish near some reefs. Caught a ton of fish. Brought a Cuebera snapper back to the dock and took it across the road and had them cook us up one of the most awesome lunches we've ever had. I think the meal ended up costing us $7, including a few beers and sodas. Puerto Adventuras was cool to check out after we got back.

Good luck.

I don't remember if it was Capt. Ricks, Seaweed, but I do remember the Bertrams. Nice boats and friendly crews.
We did start fishing 5 minutes from the dock, but were an hour out when the Midwest guys wanted to go back. Their wives didn't care. Neither did we.
Probably wanted to punish them for too many Cuervo's the night before.

Sorry.........not Cancun.....was just reminded it was a ferry to Cozumel.
You can make a long day trip also if you want to fish out of Cancun.

Google Roberto Navarro out of playa. Jig 1mile off the beach and he has good gear. You will be much more satisfied than trolling for the elusive barracuda for double the cost.
