![]() Tenkara fly fishing (Japanese: テンカラ, literally: "from heaven", or "from the skies") is a traditional type of fly fishing practiced in Japan. Primarily used for mountain stream trout fishing, tenkara is one of the most popular methods of angling among fresh-water mountain anglers in Japan. Tenkara fishing can be seen as a streamlined counterpart to western fly-fishing. The equipment is designed to direct focus to the actual fishing and catching of the fish, not to cause a major preoccupation with the equipment. Only a rod, tenkara line and a fly are necessary for tenkara fishing (no reel is used).
Tenkara has been virtually unknown outside of Japan. In 2007 Chris Stewart had accidentally stumbled upon this exciting technique. After numerous failed attempts to mimic eastern tenkara using crappie rods, Chris received his first "real" tenkara rod early in 2008 . Since then he has been intimately involved in promoting, spreading and explaining tenkara in the US. For over two years Chris operates the successful TenkaraBum.com website & blog, which serves tenkara anglers the world over. Chris Stewart "The Tenkara Bum" will graciously join Rahway River Trout Unlimited this Wednesday September 19th at 7:30 to share his passion for Tenkara fishing. This presentation will be held at the Cranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Avenue , Cranford, NJ. All are welcome, please stop by...

![]() The talk will be almost as simple as tenkara itself: rod, line, fly, a little history, a little technique, lots of time for questions and maybe a few tips on tying tenkara flies.
Whether you've just been curious about tenkara or have done it for years, stop by. I figure if you leave right after work, any angler within 100 miles of Cranford ought to be able to make it. Its free, so see you there!
