Default Gift Cards to burn

I'm in the early stages of planning a trip to the Salmon River with my brother in law in the spring. We're going to be targeting Steelheads.

I got a gift card to Orvis and Dick's for Christmas and this is what I'm going to use to outfit for the trip.

Any suggestions on gear, the area, or the fish? I'm leaning toward getting one of the Orvis fly rod kits and some good waders and boots.

Ugh... .depends... on what you have in gift cards...

you can burn through really quick since orvis is way over priced for its goods...

If you plan on doing a good steelhead trip on the river...

Things to have

Good vest
If you are fishing flies or egg sacks.. flies cant hurt
Definately good waders / boots (stocking foots / neopreme footing) - you gonna do some walking
Walking stick - optional - depends on how good you are walking in teh river
Salmon river is lick walking on an ice skating rink so you better get either felt soles that you can put hex heads in the bottom of the boot or if you dont, get some kind of corkers

Rod / reel - you can get a lot of opinions there... Something in a 7/8 weight
Reel - important, dont want a knuckle buster since those fish will run you

Good set of shades if you dont have them already
Fly line / tippet material would be good to get
Snips / forceps, if you dont have them
Good little boxes for flies
Good little boxes for hooks sinkers and etc if you fish beads or sacs

Nice hand gloves or a good rain jacket if you dont have one

Have fun and good luck

Good waders a must min.'3 mil neo, insulated bootfoots by far warmest. To go with boots you 'll require korkers w/ cleats! A must!!
A seven weight fly rod is ample 9' min length, 9.5 even better, lengthens drift area.
Most rig with float lines.& indicators , proper rigging is very important, unless who ever your going with knows the ropes I would purchase terminal on scene & get required advice from local shop like fat nancys!

A fishing jacket , a warmwaterproof style is far better than a vest, or maybe chest pack less confinig!
The best run is occurs in fall , spring timing is everything , run much shorter duration, so I would get on steelhwhead site and clerk info from guys that love this type angling !
Good luck!
