With the morning rain, I scrapped my plans to try to get the boat waxed; I took my son over to Turkey Swamp Park for their outdoor expo and fishing derby.
The park staff and the various spoonsor organizations did a fantastic job of putting together a nice event for about 50-60 kids. The rain held off for the event; and just about all the kids there managed to catch a few fish with bluegills and pumpkinseeds making up the bulk of the catch. However, there were also some channel cats, a few bass, and a really nice crappie caught and released.
My son, Adam, had a banner day cranking in at least 15 panfish and a small 8.5" largemouth during the 12:00 - 2:00 tourney. However, I coudl tell he was a bit bummed that he didn't catch any channel cats as they made up the bulk of the prize winners. (Unfortunately, we didn't know they were stocking catfish for the event, so all we brought were some red worms. Next time, we'll be sure to bring some bunker chunks, chicken livers, or hot dogs.)
Kudos to all the folks that worked to put this event together; I would definitely recommend it next year for anyone looking to get their little ones out for a low pressure, relaxing couple of hours.
