Opinions Needed on Older Bayliner

Hi, recently I inherited a 1988 Bayliner Trophy Center Console. It is the 1710 model which just over 16ft long. It has a 1990 70HP Tohatsu motor on it. I have always been an aluminum boat guy so this will be my first fiberglass. I am looking for opinions on these boats. I have heard some bayliner horror stories, and then I have also heard alot of good things. The floor was redone 2 years ago and is solid as a rock, the transon also looks good. Any opinions? Also I have always had Merc's and Mariner Outboards, how are the Tohatsu Motors????

Bayliners have a reputation of being at the very low end of boats. You get a lot for your money, but you get what you pay for... There is a reason you don't see many old Bayliners around, especially in the salt water.

If you are going to use this boat primarily in fresh water and occationally in salt water then it will be OK. If you are going to use it in salt then I personally would rather see you look at a higher end brand.

I have heard good things about Tohatsu outboards however, my main concern would be where to get it serviced or purchase parts if you have issues.

I would keep on looking if I were you... A lot of great used boat bargains out there so there is no reason to settle.

Ooops - I did not pick that up and sorry if I pooped on your inheritance, but the opinion stands. Fresh water you'll be fine but it's not going to last in the salt/rougher waters.

At some point older boats, especially lesser brands are not worth sinking money into since you are less likely to get that money back.
