Hopefully a turn for the better…
My buddy and I fished the hook last night. Very slow pickings with a ton of shorts. I landed an 18 incher. He landed a 23.5 incher on the fly.
Beats working! |

Re: Hopefully a turn for the better…
That's a nice fish! Curious about the type of flies you're using.

Re: Hopefully a turn for the better…
Was fishing in Keyport yesterday and there were small peanut bunker all over that area. Good amount of good size snappers busting them up as well along with spot if you fished bottom. fyi, for the first time we used bloodworm bait bites and didn't get a hit. Put the same rig out with a night crawler and you got hit immediately. Go figure!
My guess to Gerry's question would be a peanut imitation of some sort. Curious to know myself. Beautiful fluke on a fly rod, you could probably feel the head shakes reverberate though your whole body with a fly rod. Very cool stuff! Were you using sinking line or sink tip or neither. Depending on the water depth you were fishing I'd think floating wouldn't cut it without using a few small split shots but curious what your set up consisted of. Either way, great job! Re: Hopefully a turn for the better…
He was using sinking line for sure but not sure what fly.
That’s too technical for me! I stick to the 1/4 oz game spinning rod ! My fish crushed the white 5 inch mullet right at the lip. I fished the rocks yesterday out front at Bradley Beach and Avon. Definitely more fish in the mix and caught a nice 19 incher with a whole blue claw crab in its gut - 3 inches on the shell measure. Insane. I should have gotten out there earlier the ocean was super calm in the morning . By 2 pm it was a total war zone washing machine! Oh well. The never ending hunt for these ghosts! |

Re: Hopefully a turn for the better…
Here’s the fly - probably going to get some shit from my buddy but who cares!
There’s no fish!!! The other photo was the spot in my fishes gut. His fish had an empty stomach. Tight lines! |

Re: Hopefully a turn for the better…
Looks more like a spearing fly pattern, fish in the stomach looks like a spot, maybe or maybe not. Point is larger fish in close in August is unusual which suggests again colder ocean waters. These bigger fish being caught came in on this last full moon tides. What happens between now and end of season is anyone's guess. If we get hard south winds and a tropical storm or two, fish will leave early and season is over. If not, season will extend a bit further but this season and fishery are both off.
