Trout fishing in NJ, browns and brookies

Here is the map Mike Avin made showing all the states and how many species they stock. It includes
Rainbows & Palominos (even though technically same species i beleive), Browns, Brooks, Tigers, Cutthroat, Golden, Apache, Gila, and Bull Trout

Well, well, look at that...the only state in the entire northeastern USA that stocks only one species...our very own NJ, yeah! Let's hear it for the Garden State!

(What is this mystery magic which PA and NY have discovered that allows them to stock multiple species??? Me confused...)

I guess I don't get your point on this?.. NJ has only one native trout species -brook trout. Yet you have rainbows, browns, lakers, and a even a few landlocks in waters where they are capable of surviving... The only species that were there without being stocked are brook trout.. So it seems that NJ does indeed stock more than one species at various times.. Maybe they are focused more on sustaining natural reproduction in lieu of "put and take" which in my opinion is commendable and should be applauded. Yes NY stocks many different species of trout, salmon as well, but they largely go into tourist areas that generate money.. Not only that, but the warm water complex is virtually ignored, unlike NJ.

NY stocks yearling trout many of which are barely 7 inches, while NJ stocks 2 year olds which are closer to a foot long, making for a much more enjoyable "put and take" experience believe me...

as someone that has lived 32 years in NY after 37 in NJ, I personally think NJ has it all over NY in their fisheries management philosophies.. What NJ does with its far lesser water resources is practically miraculous. NY has a treasure trove of water resources, however outside of The Great Lakes, Finger Lakes, Catskills, a lot of them go lacking in proper fisheries management.... NY has the water, but NJ has the fire in its belly to make the absolute best use of what it has available, and the results are spectacular.... bob

Remember a lot more water means a lot more water to maintain and stock. Not an easy task by any means to stock all the waters in NY considering the substantial size difference between the two states in demographics.

I understand that.. Not stocking of fish thats the problem.. Its management.. NY is awful... Clubbing pike that they caught in gill nets.. I heard about it, did NOT believe it until I witnessed it with my own eyes.. Simply because the Pike spawn in an area where trout run up a creek to spawn,,, NY cares ONLY about tourism, and the guys that tow their trolling rigs to big trout/salmon lakes, or spend money in the Catskills...

here's another beauty...

Skaneateles Lake-
Walleye All Year, Minimum Length-12", Daily Limit-Any number


There are very few walleye in this lake, but the NY STATE DEC HATES them-

Why?- because they aren't trout and the tourist don't fish for them, so they want them out of the lake, before they "damage" the trout fishery in an area that has one 300-600 foot deep glacial lake after another, all stocked with trout, and all pretty much relegated to guys that troll exclusively in 30-100 FOW with big cabin boats rigged with multiple electric downriggers... There are LOTS of other issues.. Not one lake in all of NY state with hybrids, although there are plenty of lakes that would do great with them... again, NJ looks at what it has, and maximizes the potential..

NY???.. Throw the money where we''ll make it back .. thats their approach..

Who cares? A stocker, is a stocker, is a stocker. Besides it's cool knowing that when you catch a brookie or brown that's its likely a wild fish. Maybe for variety's sake they should stock cuthroats, tigers, or those ugly as f golden abominations.
