Henri was a tropical storm when it made landfall and Montauk didn't take a direct hit. Back to Gerry post about the Army Corp of Engineer's proposed $16 billion project to protect inland waterways in NJ, how is a gate at the mouth of an inlet supposed to stop a Category 2 Hurricane like Sandy when it comes ashore if that's what a tropical storm is capable of? Can you imagine what the mouths of the Manasquan and Barnegat inlets would look like in a Category 2, 3 or 4 storm.

It can always flood around the BIG PLUG.

But would make a big difference is blocking breakwaters in NJ running N-South to break the seas. Fire Island inlet is a perfect example of that, There is a finger that runs E-W on an E-W shore line there. In FI you have to enter the inlet from the west to east, For off shore you cant even see the inlet or Great South Bay looking north.

Unlike NJ inlets that face the ocean, FI does not. It's a true storm safe honey hole.

Just one idea. Just like AHMM Harbor break water does there.

I couldn't agree agree more with the benefits of a break wall to divert water flow and slow down storm surge. Army Corp proposed plan seems a bit different. But I'm not an engineer so what do I know.

What I do know is that I don't want to spend one penny of taxpayers money to fund the 16 billion project that is a band-aid and doesn't at all address the cause of the problem. Like I said the people who will benefit the most from this are shore and bay front homeowners, sure and bayfront communities and mostly insurance companies and if they want to lobby for a preventative solution to the damage Sandy caused let them fund the tab.
