Best bet for home protection is a pump 12 gauge shotgun.

I carry a glock 380 here in Florida. It’s tiny and fits great in any pocket but you can’t carry in Jersey.

Get a simple 12 gauge.

A long time ago in a land far away I 'traded' my .38 caliber S&W revolver(standard issue for Air Force officers) for a 12 gauge Remington pump. Practically maintenance free and it functioned. I was not in the infantry. I'm sure it would suffice for home defense, recommend double 00 buckshot.
