Default Tred Barta's passing

Sad to hear that Tred Barta passed away.

Tred was one if the best tuna fisherman in the world. Period.

He wrote the book on bigeye tuna fishing.

I always read his articles and looked up to Tred. You wanted to be Tred.

One article I have saved is from the Big Game Journal which wrote about one of many of Tred's two to three day bigeye trips. The food, prep, how every penny went to fishing, the weather, the catch, trolling all night etc. etc.

Coming back in to the dock with the scuppers 5" below the waterline.

Staying out when some of the commercial guys were heading back in.

The stories go on and on.

RIP Tred...thanks for all of the tips and information. Much appreciated.

Sad to hear. The last I heard was a troubling wound that he had that might not heal. God speed my fellow outdoorsman.

Just searched for info and saw he died in a auto accident.

Jimmy and I were fortunate enough to spend many days offshore with tred, and over the years developed a good friendship. Many times we would call each other in on a good bite and it was not uncommon to have tred call our sat phone before leaving the dock when we were already offshore.

His New York number is still in my phone after all these years

Rest In Peace skipper, no fair winds and calm seas for you, you liked it rough.

He was a guy you looked up to, but he would always make you feel that he was interested in what you had to say as well. A real gentleman.

Back in the mid 80's I went down to south jersey, I Even forget exactly where it was, for a seminar about tuna fishing hosted by Captain Tred and the one thing that I will not forget was a response he had for one guy during the Q@A session. The guy asked Tred what he thought about pulling teasers and Tred responded " PUT A HOOK IN IT!" That has stuck with me all these years. The guy was nuts but he showed how to get it done. RIP CAPT...
