Default Paramount 9/17 Bonita

I gave the Paramount bonita trip a try today. Fishing was good for some and not so good for others. Being able to cast and work a jig was the ticket for bonita. Bait caught some albacore and some mackerel. I wound up with 3 bonita, 3 albies, 2 mackerel and some out of season sea bass. Pool was a 10-12lb mahi. High hook had 10 bonita and 1 albie. He had the magic gold epoxy jig and casted away all day.

What kind of rod/reed set up is appropriate for the bonita/albies? Line weight? Tackle?

12lb spin gear, 1 and 2 oz epoxy jigs, ava 007 and 017, small livebait hooks.

We were close by, pink split tail Tsunami worked very well on the albies, bait or 1/4 oz green bucktail on the bonito.

Saw only one bonito on bait on our boat. All albies, sea bass and some mackerel

If they are still around after the storm, I may catch a few killies and give them a try.

I was on the Gambler. the epoxy jig worked the best. At times it was non stop bones through out the day.

Thanks. Do the party boats targeting bonies and albies allow braided line?

Mags2013 You don't need braid. The tangles are a nightmare to get out.If you do use braid put a mono top shot on.Every boat is different,Some allow it some don't.I dont use it for bones and albies. I use mono12lb-15lbs.

Braid is a bad idea when there are albacore around. Two out of three times I was half way around the boat during the fight with some minor tangles. They would have been real issues with braid.
