NJ Shark Surf Report 7/8/17
Decided to give shark fishing a try last Saturday in hopes of catching my biggest fish so far. Location was near the southern tip of long beach island. Had a good night tossing bunker as far as possible without a kayak.
Had a couple of bites once the sun set and high tide started going out; one 5"10" Sand Tiger and lost one unknown shark that jumped twice and then presumably cut the 100lb leader on a rock. Full moon all night, was great to be able to see the sharks jumping even in the dark. Went back this Saturday with a kayak hoping to get the edge this time with more distance..but with 3-4ft surf it was tough to make more than a couple of runs past the breaking waves. ended up casting again when the sun set. Not a single bite this time. Looking for more reliable spots to catch something a bit bigger, if anyone is willing to share some general locations, I'd greatly appreciate it! |

Re: NJ Shark Surf Report 7/8/17
Great Bay off the end of radio road.. Its been a LONG time, and i don't know if its the same, but long casts were not needed. Not even sure you can still get out there, maybe a local or two will help out and let us know... Bring a LOT of bug spray, and fish sunset into the night... In any case, Great Bay is LOADED with sharks, and they are [ or were] reachable from shore and not many people bother with them... Mostly Brown Sharks[Sandbar] out there from what I recall... bob

Re: NJ Shark Surf Report 7/8/17
I just use the standard recommended stuff for sharks down at LBI. a 12ft rod that can throw around 10oz, big reel that holds 300yards+ of 65lb braid, 100lb shock leader, 174lb wire leader, 4,6,8oz weights, and a 10/0 circle hook.
Thanks for the help guys. I will try those locations. sounds like I may be too far down at LBI, and maybe they mostly hang out near the barnegat inlet. This spot is alright but the main qualm with it is that it is a shallow beach and i feel like even if I cast as far as I'm able, I'm still throwing into only a couple feet of water. Or maybe I just have to be more patient and wait for even warmer weather. The day i went and didn't get a bite, it was a bit cold compared to the previous trip.
