Striper Lures
Since we're all dressed up with nowhere to go, how about some thoughts on the "proper" use of some lures?
I bought a few Ron Z's late in the year, first time using an eel type lure. They swim unbelievably great but had no luck with it even though others were catching using metal. Figured I was doing something wrong with it. Any particular method work best with these? Krocs. Seemed every bass that hit my kroc did it on the way down or not at all. Steady retrieve? Bounce it? Very slow retrieve? Had my best success using a plain 67 with a very slow retrieve. |

Re: Striper Lures
most of my luck has been with the krocodile hitting bottom and reeling up to the top with a steady retrieve.

Re: Striper Lures
Seems with the krocs and diamond jigs after they hit bottom a fast and steady retrieve works well. Saw a guy on the Norma K last spring crush the stripers with a lightening fast retrieve got his limit plus

Re: Striper Lures
Ron is such a great guy but besides that, his lures are the best out there.
Talk about a universal bait, I've caught everything from fw trout to tilefish on his baits. I've hammered stripers off boats and blues from shore. Best way to work it from shore is to reel in twitching it straight up. For surface tuna they work well with a downward sweeping or fast retrieve. They literally catch everything!! Re: Striper Lures
Krocs.. I cast out, let hit bottom, and then reel in with a slow retrieve with maybe a twitch or two.. Unless they are all over bunker on top then once it hits the water start reeling a steady retrieve.. The eel type lures can be bounced off bottom with a slow retrieve, allowing it to drop back down then throw in a twitch or two and they are deadly.. Can just cast it out and reel it in allowing the eel to do the action.. Really have to try different ways.. Try fast, slow, twitch, no twitch, hitting bottom, not on bottom, etc. Once you figure out how they want it you can dial them in and enjoy.. I will make several casts using the same technique then if no hit i will try a different way and so on..

Re: Striper Lures
Working a jig depends on the bait that's present.
1) AVA's with tails or without work great when sandeels are present, or even sometimes bigger rainfish. Hopping them off the bottom works, but a slow, steady retrieve off the bottom with diamonds is deadly. 2) Krocs can be hopped off the bottom, or retrieved medium or fast. They are great herring/bunker imitators and the retrieve rate is the key w/ krocs. 3) Stingo's - probably the best and most versatile "jig" on the market. You can vertical jig them off the bottom, you can butterfly them, or you can slow or fast retrieve them. You can fish the stingo pb&j jigs when herring, sandeels, or any other long profile bait is around. 4) Crippled Herrings - pretty sure they're hard to find these days, but they still work. IMO one of the best and most effective vertical jigging jigs out there. Great for when peanuts or herring are around. 5) Hopkins shorty - old school! Best fished by "squidding it" - which is reeling it in at a steady pace. Bass still love them too! Great when sandeels are around as well as herring. Hope this helps! |

Re: Striper Lures
I seem to catch more Stripers on the up current side of the boat and always fish it when it's not crowded . Ava's , Hammered Diamonds , Salas , and Sea Striker jigs have been the weapons of choice lately . I just cast out the jig let it hit bottom and retrieve it back to the boat pausing once in a while . I vary the speed until I find what they want . Some times I burn the jig ten cranks off the bottom and let it flutter back . When I get hit I continue to reel until the rod loads up letting the fish hook them selves . I fish my jigs naked and change all trebles to single Siwash hooks (Salas/Sea Striker).

Re: Striper Lures
That was me HDMark always had the best luck reeling as fast as i could turn the reel. As for lures crocs first then diamond jigs if the fish are there i usually have no problem hooking up. Usually
