Default Sharks / Black Drum

Has anyone else noticed all these news reports the last week about large schools of sharks taken with an aerial view from a drone look a lot like the big schools of black drum we see every year migrating into our waters. No dorsal fins sticking out of the water, not at all the shape or coloration of sharks and they've got the reddish black coloration of the schools of drums we see every year. Seems like all the towns and beaches are beefing up security for an invasion of sharks when I don't truly think they know what species they're even talking about. I guess black drum don't increase ratings the same way sharks do. Might be time to call in Hooper, Quint and Chief Brody!

Started re-reading Peter Benchley's "Shark Trouble" tonight.
I agree with you, Broad Bill. Some don't know at what they're looking.
I don't know how reports of schools of sharks would generate increased visitors to the Jersey shore...curiosity seekers, perchance...
Increased security, that's good--more OT for the "enforcers"---go get "em Brody.

Tell me the first aerial drone shot aren't drum we see every year. You can clearly see the one that turns on its side is a drum. This is the video ABC and NBC have been airing for over a week and calling a school of sharks which clearly it's not. They're black drum heading north in search of crabs, clams, mussels etc as they do every year. There's definitely sharks swimming around in our local waters, highest risk obviously great whites after the seal populations in Cape Cod, but if the media is going to air multiple stories about shark attacks in the area and then show schools of black drum, please get your story and facts correct. There's been enough sharks senselessly killed, we don't need anti shark sentiment on the rise from the misinformation news media. If I owned a seasonal business down the shore that had maybe three to four months to make money all year long, I'd be furious at this irresponsible reporting by Network TV.

I looked at the video and it looks like a school of drum to me. This can happen way to the south of us but off jersey not likely. I have witnessed small school of threshers feeding on bunker a few years a go but that's it Anything for views and hype!

I agree BB. I also read and watched reports of shark attacks on our coast/to the north. Could some of these attacks be Bluefish? The surfer that I saw in an interview wasn't injured very bad. Foot bites/hand bite reports. Small sharks/Bluefish?

As always 2 ways to look at everything.
1: you believe what ANY /ALL media posts.
2; you make decisions on your own research and intelligence.

#1 is the root cause of what's wrong with society today.

Thanks for posting

Those are definitely without a doubt black drum.

Once again the media is hyping a non existent story.

Next thing you know they’ll be reporting about it being hot in the summer.

So in two days you went from "thanks for posting " to "this entire thread is as much BS as the news". Maybe you should take your own advise and if you don't like what's being discussed on this or any thread, don't read or reply to it. No reason to go ballistic on a benign post that is more fishing related than many other posts on the forum.
