Pike float 2.0 - 10/13/19
Floated with Captain Nick through a different stretch of the river via canoe. Trolling motor took us upstream as we fished, started early in the cold-ish morning.
No action until I downsize to a 3 inch paddletail + jig and start with a dink bass and a few perch. Switched back and forth between a 5 inch paddletail but soon just kept to the smaller profile. While trolling upstream nick has a similar jig behind the canoe and he puts together a perch seemingly every 5 minutes. We get some short pike follow to the boat without luck, two struck too short and didnt hook up. Actually one bit TOO far and cut the line above the swivel. Damn fish! Seeing this trend, I start jigging off the boat after every cast. I connect with a heavy fish down near the bottom but I never got to see it : ( Action picked up a bit with some small but bigger pike, and then land my pb pike at 25 inches. Woohoo but still no love from the big baits Nick was launching. Only action on the small jigs. Also later we double up on crappie. (I caught the bigger one lol ) It may be best to fish the warmer part of the day for these autumn-cooled pike. Also the largest pike I caught in my local stretch near home. Got a pic as he escaped |
