Default speed jigs

I watched an hour video of a 4 day Excel trip out of San Deigo. Guy recorded his efforts--was quite successful. He mostly jigged. I noticed, on everyone's jigs, the hooks on the speed jigs and others were all on the tail of the jig, not the head like they're shown in catalogs and come in the mail.
Are the left coast fishers changing things> I know before I first jigged I changed the hooks to the tail--caught 3 birds in rapid succession and mates told me the hooks were on the wrong end...now they're on the head end, as they come packaged.
Does it make a difference, even though both ways catch? Or should I not worry about it?

Also, I read that line should be tied to hook ring, not the jig. Any thoughts?

All opinions appreciated...

Out west the crews noticed that if you fished hooks top and bottom on the jigs too many fish were foul hooked instead of hooking in the mouth. Battles would take longer and there was the added danger of hooks flying around during and after battling the fish. Hook location didn't seem to make much difference. Hooks on solid ring above jig was a broken jig problem/better pull/action thing. I saw many bent jigs in the earlier/cheap jigs rigged on the bottom ring. Capt. Jeff straightened both stock hooks a couple seasons ago on one of my stock jigs. Lesson learned. Jeff still jigged 3 yft with a single 2x hardened hook on the bottom . I got ring welding kit for my jigs. I also saw that 4 day video and probably a hundred others.

Hook placement depends on angler preference and the type of jigging you are doing, and the type of jigs youre working. Most people dont piece together the difference between high speed jigging, slow pitch jigging, flicking a diamond jig, etc. All fall differently and at different rates. One one of the most over sought things ive seen is scope. Guys jigging keep jigging once theyre scoped out not realizing the jig is no longer performing as intended and minimizing the chances of getting bit. The goal is to stay as vertical as possible to get bit. Secondly is cadence. Understand the rate of fall and feel the jig so you know when to raise and drop. Flat fall, buffalo, slow pitch style jigs require a slower cadence and line feel. High speed with a moonriser or nomad streaker require fast, well-timed snaps to obtain the darting action youre looking for... like a scared sand eel or squid.

Its complex but easily one of my favorite ways to fish...

Tried hooks top and bottom, gave that idea up after 2-3 retrieves.

I'm going to use the jigs as they come packaged.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated...Learning curve never flattens (I hope).

Hooks get attached to a SOLID RING
Line gets attached to that same solid ring .

Lure gets attached to the solid ring with a split ring .

NEVER tie your line to the split ring .
