![]() Tips have never been mandatory on any of the boats that I have worked on. That being said, tipping regardless of service only makes the bad/mediocre crews worse. Rewarding bad/poor service only encourages it. I have tipped low and told them why. I have also refused a tip from a crew abusing a;!hole. I don't expect it so when I got tips they were all blessings. If the boat/crew sucks don't fish with them . Don't promote bad/poor behavior.

Of course if the service isn't up to par you put it back in your pocket or give it to the good mate, its ALAWAYS a CHOICE on a boat, an eatery, an uber etc etc. BUT when you get that good service be prepared to tip that service. Knowing you have worked on boats and always respect, read your posts what about when you did 12 hours, got people off the bottom, untangled them, retied their rigs, netted and cleaned their fish, then cleaned up the trash they left behind and they complained and walked off stiffing (you) the mates? Cant resist: I thought this was the bestest, most greatest. beyond belief economy in 6 months since the beginning of time ! LOL Everything the cheapest , lowest ever.

![]() Dales529, You have to roll with the punches. I would rather have the boat sail and not make much than not sail. Knowing how things are with the economy I just do the right thing. Some times all we get is thank you. Other times we are truly blessed. It balances out in the end . I have ranted from time to time on this site. I'm only human. It helps clear my mind and stay on track.
I love fishing and if I can't fish then I help people fish. Last edited by Ol Pedro; 08-19-2025 at 06:48 PM.. |

Because people would really be strapped with the electric rates going through the roof in many areas of Nj 20 % And another 27% on car insurance here . Sad we went from selling electric to other states to keep costs down , to buying it from other states and our rates going up . .

![]() Good captains and boats seem to always have good mates so the ones I go on always get a tip. I have very few that never been tipped.........

![]() This thread has gone WAY off the rails from where it started!.. Last time we had this tipping discussion, I was cut to shreds as a miserable, wretched, pennypinching miser because I was of the opinion that a tip was not automatic on a head boat but should be earned.. I have seen far too many mates that fished all day and barely moved from the rail so they could fill a 55 gallon drum and hose running into it the entire trip with live black fish for market. One even told me he got at least $25 each for them if kept alive. I still think its prudent to watch for good service during the trip before handing a guy $20-$30 as you walk aboard, unless you know him and know you will get good service.. I never thought a mate that sets a plastic cup of cut clam by your rod on the way out and is never seen again the entire trip was worthy of a tip.. I have seen great service, good service, poor service, and NO service by party boat mates, as well as some that were just miserable , drunk, and really had no business working with the public. Its been several years since I have been on a head boat and things may have changed I suppose, but those mates that fished all day and seldom lifted a hand to help the fares and more or less just assisted the captain in anchoring were the worst, and I could never understand how they were hired as mates in the first place...... The general consensus was last time was this.. If you don't want to tip, stay off the boat. Not sure the captains would agree with that opinion.... bob

![]() Does anyone else remember when a mate on the Jamaica was thrown overboard by a customer on a night bluefish trip back in the good old days.
