When the sea bass are hitting jigs well, there is no need to "tip" them with anything... Often when you glob clams or squid on a jig, you start loading up on congers, pout, or doggies. If they are hitting jigs use a plain old AVA, with a teaser a foot or two from it.

You can use a plain hook with Gulp. or a hair, feather, or maribou teaser, or even a small FinS type tail.. If they are on jigs, they will hit any type of teaser, as well as the jig itself..

That being said, some days if you use jigs, you catch nothing.. I'll get arguments here with that opinion, but I have seen it many times.. they want meat, and simply won't touch a jig.. Usually when that happens the overall catch is way down and no one is doing great, no matter what you are using..

I typically have a bait rig rod and a jig rod ready to go.. I start with a jig, and if they are hitting, I stay with it. If they are not hitting a jig, I switch to bait .. pretty simple.

Best bet is start jigging, and simply be ready to switch it out if they don't respond... I have seen a lot of guys jig all day and simply not get bit, while guys using bait are catching a few here and there.

Its a LOT more fun catching them on jigs, thats for sure...bob
