I teach this from time to time. Ideally you want something that has 360 degrees of visibility.

A flash light or a British "electric torch(LOL) is turned on and laid down on the interior seat to light up the interior of your boat.

The standard for the all around light in this size class is visibility of up to 1 mile in pitch black.

So, according to the above your headlight or handheld light would comply..
