Re: Sacred Cod Documentry
I watched it on xfinity on demand last nite. I'd recommend reading Mark Kurlansky's Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World, at some point. It'll really help connect many of the dots. While I can't speak for the gulf of Maine, the past decade or so has seen healthy cod populations in waters south of cape cod. Fishing out of eastern ports has yielded exceptional catch numbers for a number of recreational, charter and party boats willing to venture out to the grounds they occupy mid summer into fall.
The harshest impact is obviously evident in the gulf of Maine ports. It's a shame seeing Gloucester like that. I'm sure marshfield, green harbor, north to Bedford, Hampton beach NH and beyond are all also feeling the economic impact. Perhaps the Canadian efforts like those put on the fisher folk in Newfoundland can be rolled out in a controlled method to aid stocks in rebounding?
