Bob, it sounds like the stern was not over the structure. Either that or the current was running toward the bow. If others in the stern were having similar poor results, then there was probably no different scent on your bait. I have fished some of the 1/2 day bottom boats from AH and there was usually a rather strong current running toward the stern; so that was the spot to be.
