I used to mess around with 40, but I busted off a monster and after that retied eeverything with 60 mono. I go with 50pp, top shot of 60 mono, and loop to loop connection to breakaway rig made of 60 with 40 as loop for sinker. 60 is the heaviest I can tie effectively and well have not had a reason to jump to 80. Dont have problems with getting bites and I use 60 from the canal to the deep. dont be afraid of going heavy. the 12# I got last year broke off the sinker just like it was supposed to.
