Interesting that the survivor in the video said he was out on the deck, saw the wave coming and yelled "forward" to the captain. I assume that means they wave got them from the side or behind and he was telling the Captain to power forward.

I would imagine like most trawlers they move slow and the wave just overtook them from behind.

Tough manuvering a slow boat like that through a nasty inlet with a following sea unless as you say you time it just right...
