I once went for bluefins out of Cape Hatterrass in March of 1996. At that time there was no jigging but you trolled around until you either had a stike or came across a bait slick. Once you had either we'd toss out whole bunker behind the boat to get them in a frenzy. Once they started eatting you basically picked the fish you wanted to catch and toss your bait in front of it & hang on. My buddy and I brought 18 to the boat. I had 12 and he quit after 6. Estimates in weight ranged from 185-325. We kept the 185 and all others were tagged & released.
