rockaway river adventure

hit the rockaway river in boonton after work today.i was able to catch 3 smallmouth and one concrete critter aka stocked rainbow. all were caught on a god bless america jig slow rolled in the eddies behind rocks and slow moving pools. the fish were hitting slow tonight but still had fun.the river was clear and running at half speed.one of my spots was fenced off with orange snow fence and a no trespassing sign,i did not know they were allowed to block fishing access.probably people swimming there and thats the way they deal with it.all fish were released back safe and sound.

Good job on hauling in a few bronze backs & a bonus trout nice! Don't worry about the orange fence. It will be taken down at some point. And then you can fish that spot yet again. Good luck!

If you were where I think you were, that was my go to section of river for trout fishing when I lived nearby in Kinnelon. Hurricane Irene made a mess of the area, so it's not quite as scenic as it once was, but is still a good stretch for trout. The smallies I've caught there were really small. Nothing larger than about 8". I've often wondered about the deep hole below the falls but have never wet a line there.

Every time we drive to my Father-In-Laws, we pass that park on Main St. where it looks more like a lake on both sides. I'm always looking to see if anyone is fishing it (usually there isn't). I've had some luck with smallies on the rockaway over by Denville and spotted quite a few muskrat over there. If we make it over to the Denville Street Fair on Sunday, I'm bringing my rod :D Looks like it'll be a washout though.

I grew up in Boonton near where the Rockaway enters the Jersey City Reservoir. Locals refer to that section as "The Mouth" of the river and some of the smallmouths taken there are huge.

IWhen I pass by there I sometimes wonder if that rereservoir is full of giant trout . I'm sure stockies from the river have been finding their way into the reservoir for decades.

Large browns have been reported caught during the Fall right were the river flows into the reservoir.
