NMFS announced it will require some fishing boats to take along observers to monitor sea turtle interactions: http://www.examiner.com/article/fish...tle-encounters

Loggerhead turtles are quite common during the summer. Seen many in the mudhole area and during trips to the canyons. Leatherback are less common but they are absolutely huge. Have seen maybe a dozen or so over the years, their size is pretty impressive. Good news is turtles will usually sound before you get too close. Hitting a loggerhead would be bad for the loggerhead, hitting a leather back I think would be worse for the boat who hit it! Part of nature's beauty when you travel off shore!

We saw a leatherback near SH channel last year, looked like a VW bug in the water. Largest turtle species in the world.
You never know what you're going to see out there...

Plastic is the number one killer of Turtles....don't care what they say.

Used to be lot's of them in the bay when I was a kid, and even more when my Dad was small. Today, I see more dead each year than alive. It amazes me there's anything left at all.
