Re: Anyone been to the Salmon River lately?
Here's DSR's report from 3/8:
The Shelf Ice is finally breaking up. There is still significant Ice but it has broken open from the gut of most of the pools. I took a quick look at the Town pool on my way in today and it has also broken. That Ice will be flowing downstream so we are finally seeing the beginning of some better conditions. The sun is out and you can feel spring in the air! The weather for the coming week is predicted to be above 40 degrees on Tuesday & Wednesday. That little tick in Temperature can turn on the bite and bring those lethargic fish back to square. Look in the tailouts as the primary feeding area for those fish looking to start packing on some weight for the upcoming spawn. Good Luck! |
Re: Anyone been to the Salmon River lately?
Fished last Friday and Saturday hooked about 25 steelhead. Back this weekend. Fished up top. Lower end (DSR, Staircase, town pool, etc.) had shelf ice or were locked up.

Re: Anyone been to the Salmon River lately?
Thanks for the replies. I think I am going to head up,
Andrushkin, If you could post how your buddy did that would be great. Seems like stone flies are working pretty well from the information I have gathered so far. |
Re: Anyone been to the Salmon River lately?
Black stones always work well in the salmon, they are my go to fly. This time of year fish them in smaller size 8-14 as that's what is mostly coming off in the hatches. And before anyone kills me, there are stonefly hatches all the time in the winter there, look in the snow at the stream edge and you can see them crawling around. If you see them you better be fishing a stone because the chrome are sucking them up. I like to fish black stones with a little red, blue or chartreuse in the thorax/throat of the fly size 10. Fish black, don't bother with brown or any other color. Bottom bounce them just like your trout fishing a worm in NJ and be sure to use fluro in 4 or 6 pound for leader and you will get into fish, good luck!

Re: Anyone been to the Salmon River lately?
OK false alarm,
Instead of Salmon River he headed out to hit up places between Buffalo and Rochester. He wont tell me exact spot since ... well he just wont do it that little bugger. Anyways as per his report 3 steelheads and 5 browns so far but that's somewhere between Buffalo and Rochester ... not Burts Dam. Andre |
