Tilefish deep drop /tuna jigging set up?
Hey Folks,
I have been very indecisive on a rod/reel combo that can handle deep drops for tiles and also act as a jigging rod for tuna on my canyon trips. Since im working with a tight budget I was thinking of going with the following Penn Baja Special 113HN Shimano Terez TZCX66XHPW which is rated extra heavy/extra fast and 6'6 any feedback would be great! |

The rod is good but you might need something in the two speed for the reel.

Definitely pick a different reel. Oceamax10 tallica16 etc.

The braid line sizes are different for each type of fishing. Tile is normally 40 - 50 lb where tuna jigging in our area is 60 - 80 lb. That's one issue you have trying to use one reel for both applications. I have the Baja and a PE8 for Tile loaded with 50 lb and use a Ocean Max 6 for jigging with 65 lb braid.

I have 60-65 hollow on my tile reels and don't experience issues with scope or holding bottom.
Unless you want separate duty reels you'll be fine with 65. |

Thanks all for your insight, this is a hard discussion and I appreciate all the feedback. I think I'm going to just go to the reel seat or fisherman supply and feel out a few rod/reel combos before shelling away $600+.
Hopefully I will report back after my trip with a great report of a tuna/tile slaughter |
