What is this thing?

My dad gave me most of his saltwater tackle, as his fishing days are pretty much over. This was in the tackle box and I have absolutely no idea what it is. I asked my dad and he didn't remember.

So anybody have an idea as to what this thing is?

Squid jig.... You jig it up and down, the squids go to attack it and get caught on the barbs

Cool, thanks. I figured someone here would know.

Now I can bring it to parties and have people guess what it is.

So do a lot of recreational anglers actually fish for squid?

Mostly done at night while on anchor chunking for Tuna. The lights from the boat attract the squid. You cast the jig out and jig it up and down until you get one. Once the squid are caught they are put in the live bait well, and or usually go right back hooked through the mantle on a Tuna rod.

Tuna love live squid.... It's almost a sure thing if you have Tuna in your slick. Swordfish love them too.

Yes, party boat outta MA go for them in the spring when they move in thick. I also catch them off the docks in Montauk at night during the incoming tide.

And as Gerry stated, at night when chunking tuna... Although I tend to use a sabiki tipped with some meet from the chunk totes : )
