Captain Shrimp?
 

I have been thoroughly enjoying running the dirty shrimp this last month for the stripers. With fluke season upon us I can see me spending lots of time on the water. Does anyone know the CORRECT way to log days on the water in case I did something crazy, like sitting for my captains license down the road.

Not sure if it's changed but there is a form you complete that you put your hours on, date, time etc. You can either submit your own supporting documentation that you own a boat like a copy of your registration, title or insurance or in the case of you fishing with another licensed Captain, they will sign off that they were with you.

You do not need to log hours, only days on the form. Also, you do not need specific dates, just how many days in each month you were on the water.

As Gerry mentioned - if you are documenting time on your own vessel, the USGC will require a copy of the registration cards or other proof of ownershipfor each year. Some of the guys in my Capt's class didn't keep a copy of their past registrations and they had to request them from the state. At $15/copy, it can add up pretty quick depending on how far back you need to go.

to be quite honest steve, the coast guard has cracked down on gross tonnage for captains licenses lately, back in the day, you could put time in on a 25 ft boat and still get a 100 gross ton license, now, they base it on what you are logging most of your time on, so if you were to log time on the dirty dirty shrimp, yes that was two dirties, you would probably get the smallest they have which in turn would only allow you to run a boat up to a certain size, which would be considerably small at 10gross tons, which i think is the smallest..
