GAMBLER --About Tilefishing

I've had a lot of questions from fishermen who want to try the tile trip but are not sure what it is all about.

I'll try to answer here the most asked questions.

The guys who love it, really love it and come back with us every year.

Like the canyon trips, we board in the order you sign up.

If the wind is forecast for over 20 knots, we will not go and you may reschedule or get a refund if we need to cancel.

Tilefish can be caught drifting or anchored but it is better fishing if we can drift and we almost always drift.

You will need 300 to 500 yards of braided 60lb test on a 4/0 sized reel (or a reel that can hold that much line. Your reel should have at least a 4 to 1 ratio. Your rod should be at least 6ft and be suited to hold a lot of lead. A tuna jigging rod should work well.

We do have a limited amount of rental gear on board --so let us know if you will need a rental rod when you sign up.

A few guys bring electric reels but it is not essential.

We have big sinkers and tilefish rigs that you can purchase on board.

Depths vary and could be anywhere from 350 to 700 ft.

For bait we supply squid but we will also have other baits on board. Golden Tilefish are not picky but some baits stay on the hooks better than others.

Other fish that we have caught while tilefishing: Hake, wreckfish, rosefish, ling, whiting.

Golden tilefish is one of the best eating, often compared to lobster.

Our galley cook, Tom, will be flipping burgers and cheese steaks and breakfast sandwiches.

It is a good trip and great fun if you don't mind a lot of reeling. Also a good alternative to get your mind off the yellowfin while waiting for the fall run

I signed up for April 12 at the show. I've fished once before for tile on a Canyon Runner charter off of VA / NC. It's a lot of fun.
