Fly Fishing?

I had a birthday recently and got some nice gift cards to use up, and I have been toying with the idea of finally getting into some fly fishing. The problem is don't really have an idea of where to start. I have looked at some sites to see what is available and there is way too much equipment for me to even know whats what. I was hoping someone could provide guidance of a good beginner setup, and any good instructional videos, books or websites.

I did the same this year. I had some Orvis GC to use up and I got 1 of their 4 piece 7 weight rods...comes with a nice case too.

First things first, you need to decide on what species you want to target. I got the 7 weight for an upcoming Steelhead trip (i think the brother in law is backing out..but that's a different story). 5 weight was recommended for trout.

After talking with some fly guys from the Garden State Outdoor Show, it was recommended that I get an 8 weight reel and line. I bought it there from Shu-Fly Tackle & Fly shop.

Next up for me is some fly casting lessons.

NJ troutin' 4 - 5 weight rod 8-9' length , floating line is fine for most applications. It's important to get the correct outfit from the start! Since you don't have the expierance find someone that does to oversee your purchase!

Re: Fly Fishing?

woolly buggers - olive, black, dumbell eyes/bead headed/ and plain; Wooly Worms; Hairs Ear Nymph (bead head and plain); Prince Nymph; Elk Hair Caddis (tan and black); egg flies; streamers of various types. Some hopper imitations. AND of course stone flies: black and other colors.

everyone will have their favorite, must have, fly or flies

IMO start with wooly buggers and go from there :)

Keep it simple. If fish are rising, try various dry flies. If they are not, fish deep. If you see bait fish, then fish streamers, or buggers.

Re: Fly Fishing?

I would pick up a few different types of flys.. Get a few Bead Heads in different colors and sizes.. few dry flys.. and like others have said are all good flys to start with and produce fish..
