And the Orangecello is born!

Didn't make the wine this year so we ventured into the orangecello again. Lemoncella up next. Below is the recipe we made:

15-20 large oranges
2 750ml bottles of Everclear
5 cups of sugar
5 cups of water

Cut orange rhines into(quarters) and remove the pith(white layer) from the orange peels- eat an occasional slice of orange with your favorite libation while cutting and pithing
Place peels into large bottle and add Everclear or other grain alcohol
Add sugar to water and boil until clear. Let cool and add to bottle
Shake mixture to permeate alcohol, place in freezer to chill.
Ready to drink in 3-5 days.

Drink responsibly....yeah right with grain alcohol!

This can be made with 100 proof vodka but will take considerably longer to ferment

just a couple of tips, 1) make sure you wash the oranges- pesticides and such
2) you can use a good vegatable peeler (the ones that look like a Y) to "skin" the oranges, will save time and you can save the oranges for another time to eat.

Not sure how it would taste with Mangos, guess you could try it, I've only done oranges or lemons. Let me know how it works if you do. Make sure it's a well made peeler, I used one once that was flimsy and bent it up pretty good with the thick skinned oranges. Make sure you chill it real good before drinking

Sharky........

Mine is starting to come to life. I bought 27 lemons, and 3 bottles of everclear. They are fermentilng in the closet.

I went to Peir 1 and bought some nice clear bottles and now have a cool Christmas gift for some of my friends.

Thanks for the info and I'll let you know how it is when its done on 12/22.

Howard, perfect that they are fermenting in the dark. Once ready, strain with a funnel and use a paper towel( coffee filters take too long). We used decorative bottles and put inside baskets of home made Italian cookies and chocolate my wife makes too, great gifts. Don't rush the fermentation but chill in the freezer as it seems to make it that much better.

quick question, you let it ferment in the freezer? or should it ferment in the dark then put it in the freezer? think i'm going to give this a whirl

I saw this on you tube because I was confused. I have a big jar fermenting in the closet now and can't wait to bottle it just before Christmas.

I did it with lemons but, you can use either.

Let the mixture ferment in the closet first but you can put in the freezer if you want to drink it sooner. With the grain alcohol, there's less time needed as with using the 100 proof vodka. Put into the freezer before drinking either way, makes it nice and smoothe when sipping, or shooting!
