Acid wrap, spine up or spine down?
 

Considering wrapping my first acid wrap. Spine up or spine down? Clockwise or counter clockwise twist? Also why do one if side torque isn't an issue as it can be in longer battles with heavier fish?Does it cast any better? Does it have any benefits on lighter rods or is it just a fad in lighter versions? I have 2 of the same model blank(30-40lb). I'm tempted to build identical rods with 1 acid and 1 regular dependent on feedback . Or do a matched set, one conventional and one spinning .

I'm no rod expert by any stretch but I found this on AI which seems to make sense on the argument.

For spiral-wrapped rods, the general consensus leans towards orienting the blank so the spine is on the bottom (guides facing down), similar to a spinning rod, to counteract torque and keep guides aligned under load; this means the stiffer part (spine) is on the outside of the bend, allowing the rod to flex smoothly without twisting, preventing the line from touching the blank and improving performance.


I have conventional and spiral wrapped 701 Mediums. About the only benefit I see on the spiral is when the rod is under heavy load, its easier to keep the reel upright. Having said all this I think spinning rods have a lot more versatility inshore but the conventionals have their place when fishing heavy weight bottom fishing. For this reason I'd do one spinner and one conventional with a spiral so you can see if you like it.

I have 4 acid wraps I had made all on different blanks and lengths. All 4 are spline down and the guides roll counter clockwise. Definitely lays nice in your hands when you really lay sone torque into it.

Are you using left handed reels ? Right handed clockwise, left handed counter clockwise ? No difference ?

FYI just checked both my spiral wrapped rods, one is a custom and the other is factory and both are counter clockwise wrapped.

Guides roll in the direction of the hand your holding the rod in .
Holding in your left hand they roll to the left looking forward .
Holding in right hand they roll right looking forward .
It’s supposed to oppose the down ward pressure of the act of reeling
