Braid Question

While fishing the other day the guy next to me, his line just broke while he was reeling in a fish. A little later it happened to me while only reeling in for a bait check. I checked where the break was and not at a knot and it wasn't a clean break. It was frayed (sp) a little. This happened to me before, rare, but it happened. I checked my guides with a cotton q tip for grooves, uneven, rough etc. but nothing.

Thoughts?

Did you guys cross lines at some point while one of you was fighting a fish ?
Damage doesn’t need to break that instant , and. An happen later in the day

Happened to me a few times, like there was someone down there with scissors. Certain pieces we fish are really sharp especially when they rise up a lot from the bottom or have crevices you fall into when you drag you sinker across the bottom and it suddenly drops 5 or 10 feet. Not sure this was the case with you but in those situations I'll tie a longer floro top shot on since it's more resistant to abrasion then braid.

No lines crossed just happened randomly. I can't remember when I put on new line or reversed it.

Re: Braid Question

It probably was the piece you were fishing that might have had some higher structure. Doesn’t hurt to reverse your line if you think it’s old but it’s a little bit of a pain since you have to spool it twice unless you put it on another reel.

Re: Braid Question

Could be structure, kinks, or spool/frame pinch . I fish a 25' top shot of mono on my bottom reels. It makes tangles a lot easier to handle and gives a little stretch to the line. If you fish level wind reels check the line guide insert on the reel. You can use unwaxed dental floss to check for cracked inserts/rough guides.

Good advice is to store reels out of the sunlight. I keep mine in a cabinet between trips.
