Current striper run - advice needed

Have a charter this week and plan to bring my own gear. Can I get by with a spinning setup (I know the rod and reel are appropriate power/action for the size of the fish) but can I use 20# braid?

Also I assume I need 4oz diamond jigs with tubes as they are feeding on sand eels? I have tons of shad rigs but assume they are useless now?

I’m going to tackle store tomorrow and trying to determine what additional tackle I need?

Thanks.

Ask the Charter Captain. He's the guy taking you out, he may just be trolling. Here the answers will have you spending $300.

With correct drag settings. You can get by with 20# but IMO fighting bigger fish that will be released your releasing a fish that will become crab food .
Wearing them out with an extended fight they will swim away and end up dead on the bottom .

Lots of fish well above 40# being caught , with the possibility every bite could be a much larger fish .

Save the 20# for later runs of smaller fish .

Tackle should include imitations of the forage they may be eating .
Ava , shads , croc spoons , top waters should all be in your bag .

This morning Ava 47 was ok , but fast drift a 67 way out fished a 47.
Need to have it and not need it , than need it and not have it

Thanks Dan, just wanted to confirm it is still primarily a jig bite and confirm the size these fish are running.

I know I could ask the charter capt, but obviously I asked this board bc there are people I trust with experience. Maybe I didn’t want to call the charter capt at night when I knew he was sleeping.

Was a great jig bite again today .
But tomorrow could be on bunker and it be a shad bite .

IMO have a rod able to throw shads , NLB etc
Another to jig Ava’s or metals .

IMO it’s way easier to fight a big striper on a conventional set up when jigging in the deep .

MH spinner for throwing shads .

.

Will bring everything. Kept seeing fisherman using spinners in all the pics I see on this site and FB and was curious about that given the size of the fish. I have an arsenal of very good gear, was just debating what to bring.

Thanks.
