Tuna jig hook placement
Venturing off to my summer Tuna jig trip. To this day i still have never hooked a tuna on jig.
I'm wondering is it wise to ever put a hook on the bottom ring of the jig? I figure with Tuna being so line shy, putting a hook on the bottom part would scare them away from from striking? Thanks in advance. |
Re: Tuna jig hook placement
Many times it will cause it to foul with the line .
And then you’re relying on the strength of the jig wire to fight the tuna . Sometimes having the top assist hook longer so it reaches almost mid jig is best . As is using a larger wider gap hook . ALWAYS tie to a solid ring or grommet as shown . Many guys tie to a split ring which is an easy way to lose a big fish Here is a simple demonstration https://youtu.be/rCoYz6805JM . |
Re: Tuna jig hook placement
I spoke with Eric from The Reel Seat in Brielle and this is how he told me how to rig up when jigging tuna;
-At the end of your leader attach a #220 Spro swivel. -On the other end of the swivel attach a split ring. -Attach a solid ring to the split ring. -Attach your assist hooks to the solid ring. -Attach your jig to the split ring. The above allows you to change jigs by just removing the old jig from the split ring & replacing it with your new jig. |
Re: Tuna jig hook placement
That's what I've been seeing on most 90/120 gram jigs.
How about a 140 gram JYG jig??? They hook them a little different. Any input???? Meat Hunter |

Seen their rigging that’s split ring to split ring assist hooks . NO WAY am I ever rigging a hook or my main line to a split ring for tuna . Seen way too many times the hooks cord or the lane slips into the split ring and it fails . Hooks , main line always to a solid ring (same solid ring ) Jig to a split ring that’s attached to the solid ring . Jig never has any weight on it |

The other thing I've seen is SeaBuoy swivels with solid rings on them. Meat Hunter |

But when I look deeper in their site all their assist rigs show solid rings (as they should be ) Only thing that should be attached to a split ring is the jig . Hooks and main line should go to a solid ring |
