Porgy trip today

Hoping to avoid the mass crush tomorrow with Sea Bass opening, I got out on a non crowded non sponsor boat today for porgies.
After nearly a 2 hour sail, we stopped and for the first hour or so, it was game on. Double headers and large humpbacks coming up. I’m thinking…what a nice day to end my porgy season.
Then like magic, the action literally stopped, almost cold dead, with a pick for the rest of the day.
Last night, I guaranteed Mrs. Porgylber that I would pull in keeper sea bass, since the season hasn’t started. Well……..I landed 3 (tossed back), then wham. Definitely wasn’t a porgy. Didn’t even feel or fight like a sea bass. Except it was. A beautiful female…that measured out at 19.5 inches. And thick! Easily over 5 lbs. Maybe over 6!
Before returning her, I gave her a kiss. Told her to make more babies….and we shall meet again! Arghhhhh!!!

Sounds like you had a great trip. Pound for pound porgy's are one of the best fighting fish out there and they are also good eats. Kudos on letting the jumbo swim for another day. I often do the same thing! Tight lines!

Thanks so much! I totally agree with you regarding the fighting abilities of the porgy. Especially on light tackle. Lots of fun to catch and eat.

I know what boat you were on. How was the bait? Last time I was on it wasn't very fresh.

No complaints with the bait. It wasn’t straight out of the clam, as the mates didn’t do any shucking. It didn’t seem old or disintegrate when placed on the hook.
