Do you keep paper charts on board????
 

If so, why?

Only reason I ask....winterizing and cleaning out boat today. Have chart tubes that haven’t been touched in years in the cabin.

Always kept them out of habit but no idea why....:D

I used to use them on charters to get PLAN B while out. Too much to look for in a much smaller plotter screen.

Look at wind and sea conditions and see which gives me best shot at fish given the conditions on the boat that day surrounding us.

It did save the day a few times.

For a generation of USNA graduates there was no sextant, divider or compass training. After 2 collisions out in the Pacific in a few months, the 100% reliance on electronics has been stopped and the midshipmen are learning the 'old ways'.
I'll keep my charts!

The morons who killed people on their ships are NOT taught rules of the road (COLREGs) . Did you know that? The Navy does not train them. A few dozen sailors are dead through trained in incompetence and arrogance. Yes the cargo ship was supposed to avoid too. But god only knows what they need to run a ship. Possibly anyone tall enough to see out the wheelhouse windows. LOL

Nothing to do with electronics. One was T-boned killing 14 sailors on a destroyer by a 400 foot Philippine cargo ship in the Pacific The helmsman, radar, OoD and CIC all ignored it and should have even eyeballed the colliding ship. That WAS the trained navy protocol. We don't move for no one- IGNORANCE. Surprised there are not more collisions.

It was ignorance, not electronic reliance that caused the two crashes. They were trained that everyone gets out of their way.

One solution suggested was to put USCG Coxswain's on Navy vessels. How stupid is that? How about train your own people right like every six-pack, and Boater Safety Certificate student knows. DUH!!

I like charts as it gives you the whole world in one view. Cant do that on an 8 inch screen. Or even a 24 inch screen if you could afford that big.

I thought the same as well but being from the area forever and knowing it well I have no reason to look at a chart for the big picture.

Seems like I keep them on the boat out of habit but never pull them from the tubes. More of a winter time research and explore thing on the kitchen table!

I know I've forgotten about some spots. Spots that saved the day a few years back.

To each their own.

I used to pre plan a charter or personal trips the morning of( see wind and sea conditions) with plans A, B and C in my pocket.
