Got Caddis?

One of the best NJ caddis hatches I've ever seen happened on Monday on the Pequest. The pictures don't do any justice to the swarms of caddis that were all over the river. Fly fishing with nymphs outdid the spin fishermen by a long shot for obvious reasons. The trout were all over those bugs. It was good to see how the trout switched from pellets to bugs so quickly.

Last week it was a tremendous Hendrickson hatch on the South Branch. I am so happy the state lifted the preseason closed waters regulations. Fishing during one of these hatches would have been impossible in the past.

After catching a lot of fish early on lures , I broke out the fly rod .
First time since my dad passed away .

Had 5 on an adams , and then shut off with a crazy Hendrickson hatch going on .
Switched to a Bead head hares ear and it was the best trout fishing I have had .
Caught fish for over an hour and a half on almost every single cast .
All small trout from 11/13” but a ton of fun .

I actually ordered a ton more flys to enjoy this time on the river again

Haven’t seen hatches like happening now on NJ streams , if you fly fish no better time then now !

Grannom caddis is hatching now. I have been using peacock caddis size #16 for dry and also have been catching using caddis emerger size 16 when nymphing. Pheasant tail also works well while nymhing.

Stone flies were out in full force last week and week before... first I thought they were nats

Same thing on Flat Brook this weekend. Caught tons on Royal Wulffs. Not exactly matching the hatch, but it didn't matter.

Precisely: last few weeks were great for little blackstone flies.

This Saturday and Sunday, I saw few Little stoneflies: very little. It was mostly grannom caddis. In addition, Hendrickson spinners and duns were floating by unscathed by hungry trouts.
