Speaking of Keitechs
Seems like the majority of the posts in the 'bait and tackle' section are saltwater related so I'm posting this here.
What color/size/style/technique keitechs has everyone had success with? The 4" sexy shad paddletail has always been my preference on a trokkar jig head as a swimbait and chatter/spinnerbait trailer for the raritan and canal on an unencumbered steady retrieve. I haven't had a lot of success with the fat impact (gold flash minnow). I recently picked up 4" blacks (for overcast days in the canal), 3.5" bluegill flashs (instead of biting off the heads of 4's when they're short striking), and 4.5" sight flashs for larger presentations. I used to throw out the short strike bitten off paddletails but I realized they'd work on ned rigs and splitting the remaining tail works for flutter presentations. |
Re: Speaking of Keitechs
Many a walleye on the 4" easy shiners on round head jigs. Any color as long as there is glitter in the body. I just wish they would offer some of the colors in the US like the ones available in Japan and Europe

Re: Speaking of Keitechs
Fats. Pro blue/pearl. The green/silver with flake. Only colors i use. Predominantly on a round head or shaky head jighead. Anywhere from 1/8 to 1/2 oz dependent upon where I'm fishing and how I'm fishing it. Smallies to 20.5" and walleyes to 28.75". Ive also had big channels and carp crush them too. 3.3 to 4.8 sizes
Never gave the easy shiner a fair shake...yet. |
Re: Speaking of Keitechs
jigman/scoward- retrieve?
ps- GREAT info, thanks! |
Re: Speaking of Keitechs
I'm usually targeting eyes, so i'm using what ever weight jig i need to thump the bottom. 1/4oz to 1oz depending on depth, current, or wind. Cast, let it hit the bottom. Then figure out what the best retrieve for that day is. Some days its a constant slow roll along the bottom, some times a reel-drop, reel-drop retrieve gets em biting, some days its a snap jig retrieve. But on most days..... nothing works and I catch zilch! haha

Any and all retrieves just as long as it's sloooooooow. The Henry ford approach to options!

Re: Speaking of Keitechs
great advice...
put a dab of crazy glue on the jig head/shank to secure the bait. i find it makes them last longer especially if you get small fish pulling on the tail. |

Re: Speaking of Keitechs
That's a fancy jig head. I lose too many to get that fancy. The Keitechs are pricey enough! Lol. Never had much of a slippage or tail ripping problem

I just like using what I already have buried with my other stuff that seemed like a good idea back when I bought it. |

Re: Speaking of Keitechs
I like natural colored ones, for walleyes I've noticed squid scent works well too. Sub 60 degree water I just hop it on bottom. This time of year I cast and let it drop to bottom. Reel it straight in at keeping within 2ft of the bottom, the closer the better. Occasionally let it die and drop to bottom. I've found I do better in warmer water with reeling it in slowly with a few pauses than hopping it like a true jig.
